Impact/Purpose:
The Coastal Generalized Ecosystem Model (CGEM) is a dynamic, three-dimensional model with functionality to simulate biogeochemical processes of coastal, estuarine, and freshwater ecosystems. CGEM is a valuable open-source modeling tool capable of interfacing with commonly applied hydrodynamic models to address eutrophication and nutrient related water quality issues as well as climate change analysis. CGEM offers users the flexibility to select model formulations and parameterizations to best suit varying ecosystem conditions. This flexibility will further the modeling community’s ability to quantify model structural uncertainty.
Description:
Eutrophication and nutrient related water quality issues are an increasing threat to coastal, estuarine, and freshwater ecosystems across the globe. Managers and policy makers commonly rely on complex simulation models to address water quality impacts and to predict outcomes from future management and policy scenarios. The Coastal Generalized Ecosystem Model (CGEM) represents the next generation in ecosystem modeling, with numerous formulation options and the ability to interface with commonly applied hydrodynamic models. CGEM includes an optional sediment diagenesis model for simulation of oxygen and nutrient fluxes from sediments, as well as simulation of carbonate chemistry (including pH, DIC, and alkalinity) for acidification and climate change analysis. Open-source code allows users to add or modify CGEM formulations as required and provides easy access to data via open-source NetCDF formats. The CGEM download includes all model source code as well as pre-processing utilities for linkage with Environmental Fluid Dynamics Code (EFDC) hydrodynamic models to provide the user with maximum flexibility in model implementation.
